Information on the site

The castle was donated to the Province by the Papafava family to be restored and used for cultural purposes.

The oldest part of the complex is the tower, built for defensive purposes around the year one thousand and raised during the Carrarese period, on the southern bank of the Bacchiglione. Also during the Carrarese period the remaining buildings were added. During the Venetian era the castle lost its defensive function to become a fluvial port on the river trade route between Padua and Vicenza. Currently it houses the Museo del Fiume Bacchiglione. In fact, the various sections of the museum preserve artefacts found in the Bacchiglione river from the 1970s to today.

Of particular importance are the bronze and iron artifacts of pre-Roman and Roman age (weapons, well-made vases, the dagger, the bronze figure depicting a warrior on horseback), the monoxile artifacts dating back to the 8th century AD. (initially it was thought to be used as a boat but, more appropriately, given the size and the tortuosity of the river, we must think of their use as support for watermills) and the numerous ceramic finds from the Middle Ages and Modern more than objects of domestic use).
